List of Natural & Alternative Health Resources For Dogs & Cats
There is a lot of information on pet health and nutrition on the internet, but not all of it can be trusted. We have done the research and these are some of the very best alternative, natural pet health resources out there.
Dr. Karen Becker
Dr. Becker’s veterinary practice revolves around her belief that the foundation of good health and longevity is species appropriate nutrition. She attributes much of her clinic’s success to the fact that nutrition is addressed with every patient, at every exam.
Dr. Chris Bessent
Chris Bessent, D.V.M., founder of Herbsmith, practices holistic veterinary medicine, utilizing Chinese herbs, acupuncture, food therapy and chiropractic on all animals. After more than a decade of using Chinese herbal combinations in her practice, Dr. Bessent channeled her wealth of knowledge and experience into Herbsmith, Inc.
Dr. Richard Pitcairn
Animal Natural Health Center was founded by Richard Pitcairn, DVM, in 1986 as a clinical and teaching center in Eugene, Oregon for the understanding and use of homeopathic medicine in the treatment of disease. The use of excellent nutrition using home-prepared & raw foods was also emphasized. In 2002 Dr. Pitcairn retired from practice, and eventually moved to Sedona, Arizona where his wife, Susan, could explore her career in art. In Sedona, the ANHC Education Programs, dedicated to teaching and writing, was established.

Dr. Don Hamilton
Don Hamilton, DVM, is an expert veterinary homeopath who teaches other vets, and he discusses this issue in his wonderful book, Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs: Small Doses for Small Animals.
Dr. Lucretia Greear
“Being able to work in an environment where the emphasis is on the patient rather than the bottom line is a breath of fresh air,” says Dr. Greear. “We are able to focus on the animal as a whole and provide alternative treatment options should conventional therapies fail to be an option. We also find that a combination of conventional and alternative therapies often works best for chronic illnesses and cancer patients. We love being able to help animals that have been unable to find relief through other standard treatments.”
Dr. Melissa Shelton
Dr. Melissa Shelton is an internationally recognized holistic veterinarian, and owner of Crow River Animal Hospital & Dental Clinic, who specializes in using medical grade essential oils for complete and natural care of all animals. By using essential oils along with nutrition, whole food supplements, Reiki, animal communication, Alpha-Stimulation, and more – Dr. Shelton has helped many animals for which traditional medicine has no answer.
Dr. Elizabeth M. Hodgkins
Because improper diet is the cause of type II diabetes mellitus in the cat, diet must be the foundation of the management of this disease. Although the veterinary profession has been conditioned to believe that high-fiber dry diets are capable of assisting in the management of feline diabetes, the reality is that this disease has historically been extremely difficult to deal with because of this mistaken belief.
Dr. Bob Goldstein
Dr. Bob Goldstein, a veterinarian with over thirty-five years of clinical experience in Holistic and Integrative Veterinary Medicine and Susan Goldstein, a specialist in alternative therapies, emotional healing and nutrition for animals, founded Healing Center For Animals in 1995.
Dr. W. Jean Dodds
Dr. Jean Dodds received the D.V.M. degree with honors in 1964 from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Toronto. In 1965, she accepted a position as a Research Scientist with the New York State Health Department. She began comparative studies of animals with inherited and acquired bleeding diseases. Eventually, her position culminated as Chief, Laboratory of Hematology, Wadsworth Center. In 1980, she also became Executive Director, New York State Council on Human Blood and Transfusion Services.
