Organ meats are outstanding protein sources for pets and are often misunderstood. More and more pet parents are becoming aware of the natural benefits of organ meats, and we want to take the opportunity to clearly communicate the benefits to others who may be new to the idea. Organ meats like heart, liver, lungs and kidneys have been used in pet foods for years, but they have gained more recent recognition as rich sources of nutrients, possibly because of their inclusion in raw food diets. They are technically considered by-products, but they are good by-products, not bad ones, and should be viewed as excellent sources of protein. We will outline the benefits and dispel the myths about organ meats.

The Benefits of Organ Meats

There are three main benefits to dogs and cats that consume organ meats:

1. Nutrition: In the wild, the ancestors of our domesticated dogs and cats instinctively chose to eat organ meat first because of its high nutrient density. Including organ meat as part of a balanced diet provides your dog or cat essential vitamins and minerals like B vitamins, folic acid, amino acids and vitamins A,D and E from natural food sources, reducing the need for supplementation.

2. Digestion: Organ meats are highly digestible, making them an efficient source of protein and nutrients.

3. Taste: Organ meats are highly palatable. They are nature’s great-tasting secret because they provide the rich taste that dogs and cats instinctively crave.

Dispelling the Myths

Are organ meats, like livers and kidneys, toxic? • Healthy livers and kidneys function to remove and eliminate toxins, not store them.

Reputable manufacturers only use organs from animals raised for human consumption, ensuring healthy organs. And while organ meats offer high levels of vitamin A, the levels of vitamins in pet foods are carefully controlled.

Should I be concerned about fat and cholesterol levels?

Some organ meats have higher fat and cholesterol levels than traditional meats, however, dogs and cats metabolize foods differently than humans do. They are capable of consuming a wide range of dietary fats and still maintain normal lipid levels. In addition, organ meats have natural levels of L-Carnitine, a nutrient known to help animals metabolize fat into energy. As with all pet foods, those with organ meat are monitored for their nutritional content to provide a safe and balanced diet.

Fact or Fiction:

Organ meats are like all other by-products?

Organ meats are bad for my pet?

Fiction: Organ meats provide great nutrition, are nutrient dense and easily digested. Dogs and cats were designed to metabolize foods differently than humans and organ meat is a very natural source of high-quality protein for them.

Dogs and cats love the taste of organ meats?

Fact: Organ meats are nature’s great tasting secrets and appeal to the instincts of dogs and cats.
