So what exactly is a nut?

Defining what a nut is would seem easy at first until you consider the difference in nuts and legumes and whether the peanut is a pea (legume) or a nut. But for the sake of consideration of National Nut day, the peanut can certainly be considered a well known nut in America. Peanuts are served in many fashions including peanut butter, peanut brittle, roasted or boiled peanuts and peanuts used in cooking sauces.

Peanuts are certainly not the lone nuts in the bunch though, there are many popular nuts.

  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Cashews
  • Pecans
  • Pistachios

Less thought of as a nut, but included in the group none the less is the coconut.

National Nut Day History

There is no historical background to the day honoring the nuts nor is there any specific cause for doing so. Perhaps the recognition comes from the health benefits provided by the nut family. Almonds are particularly nutritious having 17 grams of protein for each 100 gram serving.  Other nuts are high in protein and low in carbohydrate making them a good snack choice particularly for those concerned with daily carbohydrate intake. The history of nuts themselves varies by the end item. Peanuts have been grown on U.S. farms since the 1800s. Peanuts are popular with the American population who consume about 600 million pounds of peanuts and about 700 million pounds of peanut butter each year.

National Nut Day Celebration

Celebrations of nut day may include activities to teach about the history of a particular nut, or can be more on the fun end of the spectrum by making nut sundaes, or roasting nuts to be enjoyed. Treating the kids to a snack of pistachio ice cream , or a buttered pecan scoop topped with a black walnut ice cream can draw attention to the different flavors and types of nuts available today.

You should also treat your pet to the very nutritious and yummy snack that includes nuts.
