One of the most important activities we do with our dogs is to go for a walk. It's one of the best ways to build your bond. It's a way to connect and simply be present in the moment with them. Most of us are rushing from one obligation to another with technology being a constant distraction. Taking the time to properly walk WITH your dog is valuable for you both.

Most of us do not use the walk to its full potential. By having the dog learn how to heel and stay focused on his/her person, you can accomplish four invaluable goals.

1. The Beginning Of The Walk.

First and foremost, mental stimulation, this is one of the most important parts of your dog's wellbeing. The first part of the walk (from the time the leash is clipped) is used to build focus. Having your dog sit calmly before clipping the leash on is setting the tone for the walk itself. Teaching the heel position is an absolute must. Ask them to sit and look at you periodically as a check-in. You should change directions at random. This helps the dog think about what you are doing and work as a team. A wonderful bonus of walking this way is that your dog will have no reaction to other stimulation such as dogs, squirrels, or people on the walk. Dogs simply cannot focus on two things at once. You are a team and working together at the moment so nothing else matters. This is also time for the human to put their phone away and enjoy your time together.

2.  The Middle Of The Walk.

This should be loose leash so the dog can sniff around checking the pee-mail. Even dogs need to stay current with the local news. We may also find fun things like tree stumps, fire hydrants, or boulders. This builds confidence and makes things interesting.

3. The End Of The Walk.

This should be a relaxed stroll. You have worked together, had fun, and are heading home to relax and have a snack. Your dog will be fulfilled mentally and physically. You will both be content in knowing you spent quality time together. That’s what it’s all about after all!
