As of Thursday May 21, 2015, three cases of the Canine Flu have been confirmed in Michigan: two cases in Kent County (West Michigan) and one in Macomb County (Southeast Michigan). While this isn’t making headlines or breaking news, it is important to be prepared.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are two types of Canine Influenza A Viruses: H3N8 and H3N2. Thus far, this virus is not known to pass to humans. However, it is not known whether or not it can be passed on to cats. While the H3N8 flu virus has been around for over 40 years, before 2004, it was only known to affect horses. Signs of the Canine Flu according to the CDC include: cough, runny nose, and fever. As with any virus, not all dogs will show symptoms.

Both the CDC and AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) agree that if there is an infection, supportive medicine is the main course of treatment. This means supporting the immune system in order for the animal to kick the virus. Learn more about how to naturally boost your dog's immune system to fight the flu here.
