Safe Grooming Options For Senior Pets

Join our guest blogger Melissa Van Etten, as she walks us through how to help and when to schedule our senior pets for their grooming sessions.

Senior Pets And Grooming:

Senior pets have been groomed their entire lives but often struggle and resist the process. Elderly dogs and cats typically suffer from arthritis and have a sensitivity to touch and sound. Standing, sitting, or laying in the tub or on the grooming table is difficult. Despite these challenges, our older friends still need to be groomed.

Depending on your senior pets medical conditions and any behavior concerns will determine how often your furry loved one should be groomed. When booking their appointment, discuss with the groomer your pet's age, and any medical conditions such as blindness, deafness, or if they are prone to seizures. By providing this information, it will help the groomer and establishment be fully prepared for your dog or cat's visit.

Please understand while grooming senior pet's we want to get them in and out as safely and quickly as possible. Grooming may be a stressful experience for some. Shaving the coat short to stretch the duration between grooms may be suggested. Conditions of the skin and coat and the capability to stand will determine the outcome of the haircut. Humanity over vanity. But most importantly your pets will be clean and comfortable.

Melissa has been grooming for seven years. Her business is "Pet Styling by Melissa" currently located at Tea Cups and Toys in downtown Birmingham.
