What is Iridology?

Iridology is the study of the iris and what it tells us about the body. The iris begins to record information about our body when we are still in the womb! The right eye records the right side of the body while the left eye records the left side of the body. Someone who reads the iris is looking for patterns and structure of the iris fibers, discoloration or other indications that represent where the body needs support. It can also show inherited strengths or weaknesses, overall health levels and body constitution.

The History of Iridology

Ignatz Van Peczely first noticed a change in the iris when he observed an injured owl. The owl had a broken leg and Ignatz had noticed a spot on his iris. As the leg healed, the spot went away. Ignatz became a physician and started to study the many different irises of his patients. As he studied the iris he began to draw maps of the iris and noted tissues changes throughout the body. After Ignatz, Dr. Bernard Jensen continued his studies and furthered his iridology chart.

How to Study Your Pet’s Irises

When looking at your pet’s iris, you can initially get a feel for their health by the fiber structure and color. Brown eyes are more prone to have overall weaknesses with their digestion, liver/gallbladder, circulation and blood. On the other hand, those with blue eyes tend to have more weaknesses with their lymphatic system, inflammation, respiratory ailments and allergies. These are not definite but can be inherited traits.

Upon first glance I also look at the fiber structure. Tightly woven, close together fibers are indicative of strong mineral constitution that was inherited and those with little to no medical problems. Sometimes you will see a loose fiber structure that almost looks like there are holes or gaps between the fibers. This is indicative of poor inherited minerals and those with health complaints.

Examples:

Iridology is a way to review the health status of an individual or pet. Every blemish, spot, or weakened fiber structure leads us to areas of the body that may need additional support via herbs or natural remedies. We can also see buildup of toxic substances, inflammation, bowel support, low immunity, infection, depletion of minerals and more. We use Dr. Jensen’s iris map to help us locate the organ system. There are more specific cat and dog charts available but they are less detailed as well.

Iridology Study #1: Tango

pet iridology

I was able to capture a descent photo of Tango’s left eye the other day (Bengal Kitten, 1 year old). As you can see , I have both the regular photo and then I have layered the iris map over top. Overall he has a strong fiber constitution indicating that he inherited a good mineral base from his parents. You can also see that his eye color is light yellow-ish/green in appearance but the underlying color to his eye is actually blue (as is the case with most green eyes). He has a good size collarette that is evenly distributed around the pupil showing that his digestion system should be functioning optimally. There is a light border around the pupil (also called the stomach ring) that indicates the stomach. It seems to fade on the bottom side, which could show that he needs support for his stomach or hydrochloric acid. It does appear that he may still need digestive support because of the white spots located within the collarette, which could be a sign of inflammation in the digestive tract. My last main concern are the radial furrows or what looks like deep lines at the top and bottom of the pupil as well as from the medial (inner) side of the eye. These deep groves can be indicative of parasites within the body.

Iridology Study #2: Mikey

pet iridology

The photo of the brown (hemetogenic) colored eye above is from Mikey, my 14 year old greyhound. You can definitely see a difference in the fiber structure alone. His constitution shows definite weakness from his genetic background that was inherited. You can see with Mikey that he has round open pockets which are called lacuna’s. These areas represent weakness in the body not only from a mineral perspective but also in areas of the organs. They are shown in the lung, chest, spleen and abdomen areas. If I had been more diligent and known more about natural health when I adopted Mikey back in 2003, I would have taken a picture to be able to compare what his iris looked like then to now.

Iridology Readings at The Pet Beastro

Iridology is included in our Health Assessment appointments if the animal is willing to participate. Sometimes it is difficult to get them to cooperate or sit still long enough to look at each iris. If we are able to look at them, it can give us additional clues as to what organs in the body need additional support.

I'll also be hosting a seminar, on Wednesday, March 19th, 2014 from 6-7 pm where you can learn how to create an action plan for improving your pet's health. During the seminar, you will learn about health assessments, nutrition assessments and homeopathic sessions as well as natural remedies for curing your pet's ailments. Tickets and more information are available here.
