Understanding the Power of Feng Shui

Have you ever wondered why you always sit in one spot in the living room, or why you are always looking over your shoulder to the door in your office? Or why your pets insist on sleeping on the ground when they have a nice bed just a few feet away? If you have, it might be time to Feng Shui your space!

Have you ever wondered why you always sit in one spot in the living room, or why you are always looking over your shoulder to the door in your office? Or why your pets insist on sleeping on the ground when they have a nice bed just a few feet away? If you have, it might be time to Feng Shui your space!

Feng Shui deals with the invisible and the elusive. Translating to Wind (Feng) and Water (Shui), the principles of Feng Shui work with the movement of Qi, or Energy, around Wind—that which cannot be seen, and Water—that which cannot be grasped. Feng Shui helps us to arrange our spaces in such a way to promote positive energy movements and create a balanced and harmonized environment.

Feng Shui follows a map called the Bagua. This map contains nine sections arranged like a Tic-Tac-Toe board. Each square represents an area of life, and when all are in balance, the middle section representing our health will be in balance as well. Each area of the Bagua, called a gua, corresponds with a color, shape, number, chakra, direction, organ, emotion, taste, sound, planet, musical note, and element of nature.

By placing the Bagua so your main entrance lies along the bottom (Knowledge, Career, or Helpful People) you are given a map to help direct energy flow throughout your home. By using the principles of Feng Shui to support each gua of the house with correlating colors, elements, and shapes you are able to increase energy in areas where needed.

Placement of the bed, desk, and stove are the most important as these supply rest, living, and sustenance.

Bed - One should never sleep with their bed in a position to not see the door as this allows a blind spot to danger. Your bed should allow you a clear vision of the door and maintain space on both sides. Your bed’s best position would be in a power corner of the room. You can easily locate a power corner by placing the Bagua into the bedroom with the entrance door along the bottom. Your power corners are located in Wealth and Partnership.

Desk - The desk should be arranged in such a way that a clear view of the door is available. Your back should not be to the door as this removes a feeling of safety and protection over belongings.

Stove - Like the desk, the stove should maintain a clear view of the door or room. If the user has their back to the surroundings fear and surprise can enter into meals. Placement of reflective surfaces like tile or mirrors can be used so that the cook is able to see behind them at all times.

Our body's intuitive and instinctive nature guides us when practicing Feng Shui, which allows us to harness the benefits of our surroundings and bring our environment from the unconscious into consciousness.
